Advancements in the efficiency of digital computers and the evolution of reliable software for numerical computation during the past three decades have led to a rapid growth in the theory, methods, and algorithms of numerical optimization. This body of knowledge has motivated widespread applications of optimization methods in many disciplines, e.g., engineering, business, and science, and has subsequently led to problem solutions that were considered intractable not too long ago.

About the Author

Andreas Antoniou received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of London, UK, in 1966 and is a Fellow of the IET and IEEE. He served as the founding Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria, B.C., Canada, and is now Professor Emeritus in the same department. He is the author of Digital Filters: Analysis, Design, and Applications (McGraw-Hill, 1993) and Digital Signal Processing: Signals, Systems, and Filters (McGraw-Hill, 2005). He served as Associate Editor/Editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems from June 1983 to May 1987, as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2003, as General Chair of the 2004 International Symposium on Circuits and Systems, and is currently serving as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. He received the Ambrose Fleming Premium for 1964 from the IEEE (best paper award), the CAS Golden Jubilee Medal from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, the B.C. Science Council Chairman’s Award for Career Achievement for 2000, theDoctorHonoris Causa degree from the Metsovio National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 2002, and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society 2005 Technical Achievement Award.

Wu-Sheng Lu received the B.S. degree in Mathematics from Fudan University, Shanghai, China, in 1964, the M.E. degree in Automation from the East China Normal University, Shanghai, in 1981, the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Control Science from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1983 and 1984, respectively. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada, in 1985 and Visiting Assistant Professor with the University of Minnesota in 1986. Since 1987, he has been with the University of Victoria where he is Professor. His current teaching and research interests are in the general areas of digital signal processing and application of optimization methods. He is the co-author with A. Antoniou of Two-Dimensional Digital Filters (Marcel Dekker, 1992). He served as an Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1989, and Editor of the same journal from 1990 to 1992. He served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Part II, from 1993 to 1995 and for Part I of the same journal from 1999 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2005. Presently he is serving as Associate Editor for the International Journal of Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing. He is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Practical Optimization

Basically I liked the book. As a practicing "front-line" grunt aersospace engineer for a large Fortune 500 Company this book is a good and practical book for the control systems analysis I do. The big problem with optimization books like this one is that the examples are very contrived and trival. What a book like this is suppose to do is help one figure out if the the problem he/she is currently working can be "cast" into an optimization problem and then solved by any of the algorithms presented. This book is a little weak in that respect. But it is still useful and I am glad I have it in my collection.

A life-saver for immunology newbies

This book has definitely helped me visualize and conceptualize processes and concepts that are so obvious to immunologists that it's impossible to look up a definition anywhere! My only beef with the book is that on so many pages, "illustrated" means "a picture of a dead guy who invented some earth-shattering technique."

Wasko is a bit verbose

I have to agree with another reviewer. The text can be tedious and annoying while not conveying any information. Her many references to "which I will discuss in chapter (x)..." is so common it becomes a joke in her writing. While the text can be informative at times her writing style tends to be annoying and pretentious. It's reminiscent of a speaker who spends all their time telling you what they are going to tell you, that they dont really have that much to say in the end.

"Academia" at it's worst...

Being a Disney nut, I'll read just about anything that talks about the Disney corporation and culture. I found Understanding Disney at the library and eagerly picked it up. What a waste...
I should have been clued in on page 5 with this statement: "The continued expansion and popularity of the Disney empire calls for the deliberate integration of political economic analysis with insights drawn from cultural analysis and audience studies or reception analysis, or, in other words, analysis emphasizing the economic as well as the ideological, or production as well as consumption."
Huh?
She teaches a class at the University of Oregon on this stuff. Very academic and abstract, and too much so for my liking. While there were some interesting factoids about Walt's true history vs. the story told by Disney, she went into pure academia all too often. An example, labeled "Psychoanalysis And Pinocchio": "Brody observes the anal images and incorporation themes have been common in Disney tales, citing examples from The Three Little Pigs and Peter Pan. Anal images, especially featuring the "often-kick-in-the-butt" Jiminy Cricket, are a rampant in Pinocchio as images of erection (Pinocchio's nose, the donkey ears), and incorporation is appearnt in the scenes of Pinocchio and Gepetto in the whale's stomach."

At last - a really helpful self-help book for me

I'm one of those people who hate the self-help movement but can't stop hoping that the next book is actually going to make a difference, that it's the one that going to make me stop procrastinating and deal with my bad habits. So, I keep on reading books and blogs, only to be disappointed.

Not so with this book.

While the book offers the regular mix of science, personal experiences and tips, it's more down-to-earth than other books I have read. Maybe that's because it's based on a course that actually dealt with people going through the motions described in this book.

Usually, I read a book, highlight what I think makes sense and move on without incorporating what I just noted. In this case, I'm remembering on a daily basis what the author wrote and implementing her suggestions. It might actually be the last self-help book I ever read.

Putting down the book presented a willpower challenge

Speaking of willpower, once I started reading this book, it took every ounce of my willpower to put it down! (And, so yeah, I may have been spotted reading this book in my car while while sitting at red lights. My apologies to the drivers behind me for any [slight] delays my willpower challenges may have caused.)

As the above evidence suggests, I can't rave enough about this book. It's a gem, it's a god-send, and it's just that good. You'll have to read for yourself to see what all this gushing is about, but for now, here's a small sampling in the form of the titles' chapters with the author Kelly's big idea summary of each:

***Chapter 1: I Will, I Won't, I Want--What Willpower Is, and Why It Matters
Willpower is actually three powers--I will, I won't, and I want--that help us to be a better version of ourselves.

***Chapter 2: The Willpower Instinct--Your Body Was Born to Resist Cheesecake
Willpower is a biological instinct, like stress, that evolved to help protect ourselves from ourselves.

***Chapter 3: Too Tired to Resist--Why Self-Control Is Like a Muscle
Self-control is like a muscle. It gets tired from use, but regular exercise makes it stronger.

***Chapter 4: License to Sin--Why Being Good Gives Us Permission to Be Bad
When we turn willpower challenges into measures of moral worth, being good gives us permission to be bad. For better self-control, forget virtue, and focus on goals and values.

Our brains mistake the promise of reward for a guarantee of happiness, so we chase satisfaction from things that do not deliver.

Our inability to see the future clearly leads us into temptation and procrastination.

Self-control is influenced by social proof, making both willpower and temptation contagious.

***Chapter 9: Don't Read This Chapter--The Limits of "I Won't" Power
Trying to suppress thoughts, emotions, and cravings backfires and makes you feel more likely to think, feel, or do the thing you most want to avoid.

***Chapter 10: Final Thoughts
If there is a secret for greater self-control, the science points to one thing: the power of paying attention...Self-awareness is the one "self" you can always count on to help you do what is difficult, and what matters most.

Needless to say, I was enthralled and captivated throughout this book. Kelly's down-to-earth delivery of the essential insights of psychology, biology, neuroscience, and economics is beyond out-of-this-world. But, she doesn't just share the findings; she provides ways for you to see and do for yourself. Sprinkled throughout her discussions are "Under the Microscope" and "Willpower Experiment" features of this book which provide many personalized opportunities for gaining self-awareness and experimenting with new strategies to help you address your own willpower challenges--be it over-eating, over-drinking, over-spending, over-thinking, over-indulging, over-Facebooking, under-doing, or perhaps even over-reading at red lights.

In the introduction, Kelly shares her hopes that: "If this book did nothing else but help you see that common humanity of your willpower struggles, I would be happy. But I hope that it will do far more, and that the strategies in this book will empower you to make real and lasting changes in your life....By the time you finish this book, you'll have greater insight into your challenges and a new set of self-control strategies to support you."

And, indeed she delivers on that hope. Reading this book provides the insight you need to understand--and more importantly, have compassion for--your personal challenges, along with the techniques, tools, and perspective makeovers you need to gain more of that seemingly elusive self-control. Now, how can you resist that?

not a bad book

The book, using an assortment of studies from psychology and neuroscience, makes a case for strengthening pause-and-plan which enhances willpower to help modulate one's impulses. Unlike many self-help books, the author does focus on lessons gleaned from meaningful studies (she calls it "science-help") and, as such, the message conveyed is overall sound.

Two remarks:

1. The book's writing could be improved. It also follows a self-help formulaic messaging format. She gave a lecture at Google (also on youtube) where she makes an effective case.

2. The part where this book is weak: how to improve willpower in the long run. The author goes through a laundry list that includes slow breathing, meditation, exercise, getting sufficient sleep, relaxing, etc.

Many of the studies she mentions are interesting, but of mixed value as the behavior modification results are related to the short-term, at the time scale of months. Meaningful changes are measured in years. Dieters know this very well. And the long-term failure rate high.

Bottom line: what the author recommends -- being more aware of one's impulsive tendencies and training oneself to be less susceptible -- is well-intentioned and useful. However, it is the difficulty implementing them in daily life, under real-life conditions, in the long run, that is the vexing problem. And on this front, the book falls short.

I enjoy that most situations so far don't seem uncomfortable

I've just started to read this story, and so far I am really enjoying it. I enjoy that most situations so far don't seem uncomfortable, nor do they seem impossible. I've read a lot of stories where situations have been uncomfortable, and unbelievable. I like this story a lot so far.

even though at times it feels like they are

It has been a long time since I read a book that wasn't about the typical "he's a billionaire, she's a waitress" type characters. That is mainly my fault because my greedy little smutty mind knows that those are pay dirt for all o the smut! In reading Level Up, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I was drawn into the story.

In Level Up: A Geek Romance Rom Com, Book 1 (Fandom Hearts) by Cathy Yardley we meet Tessa and Adam.

She's a introvert and he's her roommate. They work at the same company and have been living in their companionable bubbles for the last year. After a night with the boys Adam starts to notice that he hasn't been letting many people, i.e. women, into his life. Tessa is basically in the same boat but not for the same reasons, she's just introverted. She wants to go places with her career but she's stuck and not sure how to move forward.

As they start to learn more about themselves, they start to notice each other a bit more. They also start to change those things about them that they see are holding them back. Not changing drastically. No one is trying to be someone that they are not, even though at times it feels like they are. They are simply moving things around in their lives and when they do, a whole different world of possibilities opens up, literally.

This isn't your typical "If I lose him I am going to die" or "She is mine" kind of story. Although there are some super cute possessive parts (yes, possessiveness can be cute) This is a story of two people who have lived their lives, pretty successfully mind you, in a bubble and are seeing what it's like to break out a bit.

Overall this is a great read with some wonderfully sexy parts in it. Ooohhh, when the...shoot, I don't do spoilers. But you will enjoy it. It's not sex from sun up until sun down but get over it, that's not life and I'm smart enough (and so are you) to enjoy a great story and plot in addition to some wonderful smut.

Sexy, Funny, and a Little Bit Nerdy!

I cannot say enough about how much I loved this book!

Tessa is the geek in all of us. She's stuck working in a man's world, but she loves it and she's not about to give it up. In the meantime, though, she's got to prove that she can play well with the rest of the big boys on campus. She's got to earn a place on the dream team or she'll never be taken seriously. Combine that with a desperate bid to save the local bookstore that requires pulling out all the stops, and Tessa's doing her best to just stay afloat.

And then we have Adam, who is sweet, sexy, and so into his roommate...even if he doesn't know it yet. He agrees to help Tessa any way possible and finds himself spending all his time with her. He quickly sees that she's so much more than just a friend and roommate.

Add in the wonderful group of girls that run the local bookstore and the hilarious cast of guys who work at the video game studio, and you've got a perfectly colorful cast of characters. Cathy's voice is witty and I just wanted to keep reading. This novel is sexy, funny, and inspiring. I can honestly say that I can't wait for more books in the Fandom Hearts series!

I read this book for breakfast.

Another solid release from Markus Almond. This book has a generous mix of one or two sentence calls to action and more invoking vignettes, much like his previous releases. What's special is that the intentional universality of the content is still easily relatable to whatever is on your mind when reading, which is great for those with a head full of thoughts and ideas. I also really appreciate Markus dedicating a chapter to money, a topic that can often get lost in the rush of inspiration.

Markus is pure genius! Ever since I picked up one of his book at my local bookstore I've been hooked! Just the first page brought so many feelings! He's made me smile,cry,laugh and has inspired me. Can't wait for more!

His operation succeeds, but in the process, he murders a high-ranking German general. The Germans punish the entire village for Savage's attack, and the form of retribution they choose is particularly merciless and horrifying. Louise, torn between loyalty to her husband and her growing love for Savage, uses the only weapon she can think of to stop the Germans from destroying her home, her family, and her village. The suspense is palpable, the action nerve-tingling, and the story gripping and original. Despite a sentimental conclusion, this is a white-knuckled, hair-raising page-turner of a thriller. About the Author
Evelyn Anthony began her writing career after meeting her husband in 1949. Primarily self-taught, she was educated at home during the War--first writing short stories for magazines. She went on to achieve success with her historical romances and espionage and thriller stories. Her novels have been selected for the American Literary Guild and The Tamarind Seed was made into a film starring Omar Sharif and Julie Andrews.

good story but not factual

In May 1944, a small French village is getting along peacefully with their Nazi occupiers until an OSS agent parachutes in with an important mission, one that could turn the tide of war. Many of the villagers are collaborators with the Nazis, including the count at the chateau. His wife, Louise, an American, has lost all respect for him because of his weak stance with the Nazis. A German officer is killed in mysterious circumstances and all hell breaks loose, with fearful retributions to the village. In the chateau lives a Nazi officer who is crazy with desire for Louise. All these circumstances create a great story and a suspenseful one. My problem with it is that Ms. Anthony should have had a WWII historian read the book before publication because of wincing factual errors. Or she should have had a better editor. Allan Dulles, the head of OSS in Bern did not know for certain that there were death camps in the Reich until the late fall of 1944. Of course most people knew about the concentration camps, but not extermination camps. Dulles had heard rumors of the death camps from escaping Polish officers, but nothing was confirmed until much later. French villagers in May 1944 certainly would not have known this. Ms. Anthony is a very talented writer and I have enjoyed several of her books, especially The Tamarind Seed. I just wish she had done more research for this one.

This is a good read of the WW II era, about the choices people make during war time and their consequences....However, this book was originally published in 1973 under the title"Stanger at the Gates".

A wonderful novel

This is an outstanding novel. It is not the novel that Germans would like to read but for French people they should hopefully put it into the school libraries. A great deal has been written about the German occupation of France and how the Germans now complain that they were treated very badly after the War by French people who did not give thanks for the material help which individual Germans had given to the French people . Frau Minden talks of a debt as if the Germans were entitled to payment for providing food.. The French people showed great courage under German occupation .
