Buy it if you need someone to bash in your footnotes.

The title of this book would lead any buyer to believe that it offers fresh insight into a mainstay of literature - the hero - an insight that promises a dissection of those myths, fantasies, epics and legends with which all readers are, to diferent extents, familiar. Be it as academic, teacher, reader or film watcher, cartoon and comic book afficionado, or role-player (the list is huge), the works open to deconstruction are expansive and the opportuntities this book offered limitless. Instead we get a hodge-podge of destruction, not deconstruction, as Hourihan veers wildly from genre to genre and across expanses of time without any acknowledgement of their significance. Throughout this book the reader will find superficial and unsubstantiated assertions which the writer fails to adequately explore and which are often undercut by misunderstandings and shallow interpretations of themes, errors of plot analysis, descriptive mistakes when outlining events and inadequately researched analysis of textual allusions. Finally the condescension that Hourihan seems to hold for those readers who do not share her view, that these narratives are white male supremacy in action, that according to her, 'cling' to tales that are 'vivid, enjoyable, easily understood, memorable and compelling' sets the tone of the entire book but says much more about her than about the works supposedly under analysis. The one redeeming feature is her description of the theories supposedly underlying her book - the author's failure to make adequate use of them in her analysis is one of its many failings.

thought provoking if ...

This is a book that maps out a territory, summarising what's known about it, without being the definitive guide. I bought this book as I was looking for background information for a unit of work on children's literature. I needed a geneal starting point that would introduce me to the theories I needed to deal with. As I wasn't looking for any answers, just things to think about, I found it very useful. Even when disagreeing with what she was saying or how she was applying the theories she was describing, I felt that she was provoking a response and forcing me to justify why i disagreed with her. I found it a invaluable starting point for the work I wanted to do and would recommend it to anyone as just that, a starting point in a very involved and involving debate. The book is uneven in its treatment, possibly a litle patronising (which is ironic) but it is an effective and readable introduction to this field of study and at least after reading it you will have some idea of the territory.

Books like this are just silly and offer no real value except to prove that opions are shared by all living things in this world and should not be taken at face value. Yes I know I'm closer to a GED than a PHD but Margery is just acting silly with her conclusions.

About the Author

Quirky and just a little bit different...

I have a fridge magnet which reads "I am diagonally parked in a parallel universe" and this is exactly how I felt whilst reading this latest offering from the pen of talented author, Matt Haig. There is no doubt that he is the master of the slightly quirky story, and effortlessly creates a whole set of scenarios which in reality shouldn't work, but which invariably do work very well.

In The Humans he has created a brave new world which is seen through the eyes of an unnamed alien who has been sent to earth to take over the persona of Cambridge mathematical genius Professor Andrew Martin, who has recently cracked the elusive Riemann Hypothesis, the outcome of which will change the human race forever.

As always, the story draws you in from the beginning, and before long you are laughing out loud at some of the one liners, most of which are inspired - there's are so many to choose from, but my favourite has to be:

"A cow is an Earth-dwelling animal...which humans treat as a one-stop shop for food, liquid refreshment, fertiliser and designer footwear"

To write any more about the story would be to do the book a great disservice. It's one of those books which deserves to be read in one sitting with no misconceptions. It will make you laugh, it will make you smile, and ultimately it will make you feel good.

Humorous parts are great; philosophical parts are not.

Premise: A socially awkward alien lands Earthside, naked on a Cambridge street...

And for a while, as Matt Haig builds from this premise, it's funny! The Humans begins quite wonderfully with the arrival of an alien who can barely disguise his contempt towards humans and believes clothing is optional. The humor works because of our extraterrestrial narrator's terrific voice, which is matter of fact and superior. For example, the first piece of "literature" he reads is an issue of Cosmopolitan, which leads to this pithy discussion of magazines:

"Magazines are very popular, despite no human's ever feeling better for having read them. Indeed, their chief purpose is to generate a sense of inferiority in the reader that consequently leads to a feeling of needing to buy something, which the humans then do, and then feel even worse, and so need to buy another magazine to see what they can buy next. It is an eternal and unhappy spiral that goes by the name of capitalism, and it is really quite popular."

I would have liked an entire book of this: just a doofy alien in human form walking around the modern world trying--and failing--to make sense of it.

Wishes never come true, however, so the last half of the book ditches the humor and devolves into New Age mumbo jumbo. The plot is unoriginal. Basically an alien comes to save Earth from too much knowledge, learns to appreciate humans, and abandons his old alien life to become a regular Joe Schmo. To supplement this lack of plot, Haig tries to explore the meaning of life through our bumbling old alien narrator, whose voice becomes instantly less charming as soon as he's humanized.

The moment someone expressly searches for the meaning of life is the moment I roll my eyes. Sure I find meaning aplenty in books, but it must arise organically through the natural interaction of characters and their environments. Even worse, the meaning of life discovered by Haig's alien is more clich�d than a Hallmark card. There are a ton of lines like this at the end that made me figuratively gag:

"To experience beauty on Earth, you needed to experience pain and to know mortality. That is why so much that is beautiful on this planet has to do with time passing and the Earth turning. Which might also explain why to look at such natural beauty was to also feel sadness and a craving for a life unlived."

There are tons of quotes about how "love is life" and how "it's only through our flaws that we can truly appreciate humankind." By this point, I'd mostly checked out, hoping the narrator had one last good joke in him about Catholics. (He didn't.)

The reason the alien comes to Earth is to destroy a mathematical proof. So here's some reviewing math for The Humans: smart-alecky alien who makes fun of humankind (4 stars) + heavy-handed existential tripe (2 stars) = 3 stars. Boom, math.

RUNS OUT OF GAS

I was very intigued by the descriptions of this book because I had found it on the Edgar nominees list (Mystery Crime Writers of America) for best book. A human math professor at a major UK university proves the Riemann hypothesis without realizing the dire consequences it will have for humanity. However the inhabitants of a planet much further away do grasp this since they are far beyond us in their intellectual development, and they send one of their own to Earth to undo the discovery. A very interesting plot, and there are a lot of fascinating discoveries for anyone who sits down to read this 279 page book. A few examples - the Riemann hypothesis is real, it deals with prime numbers as stated in the book, and it is unsolved. Another tidbit - the visitor cleverly describes where he comes from by placing a grapefruit (sun) on the kitchen table, as well as a grape(earth). He then holds up the orange representing his planet and informs all that it would have to be placed somewhere in New Zealand, to get all the proportionate distances right. And what subsequently happens to earth in that scene is very funny. But at some point I felt the story started to take itself too seriously. It became a bit preachy, the observations of human behavior started to wear, as did the 97 bits of advice the visitor wanted to pass on to a sixteen year old. And the author didn't really address why the hosts would drop the whole thing at the end. Would I recommend this? I guess my answer would be a hesitant "yes" but with the caveats above. And there is one other thing -

As I began "The Humans" I was puzzled as to how it was going to evolve into a crime fiction story; by the time I finished it, I was still puzzled. Because if this book belongs anywhere other than general fiction it might be categorized as scifi. I would like to hear the Edgar people's response. I don't think that it is a spoiler for me to comment that that are at least 4 killings in the story, and if you think about it, what really differentiates a book as crime fiction is the investigation of a crime, and there is no criminal investigation in this story. This is particularly true when one of the killings is only reported as "he's dead", i.e., the act of his killing is not central to the story. I have not read a lot of scifi, but I would imagine that there is a significant number of stories where characters are murdered, yet the book is still obviously scifi and not crime fiction. So why is this nominated for an Edgar?

THEY ARE THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s ‘Adventure’ books featuring Jack, Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Kiki the parrot were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago.

Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having substantial difficulty obtaining the original books from the shops. In fact, quite a few shops would not stock them but they were wonderful stories for teenagers! The tales are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid in some editions and the physical appearance of the books as well which I treasured as a youngster with the way in which the books were produced then making them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read these adventure stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.

Garfield is Doris Silbert Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Philosophy at Smith College, Professor in the Graduate Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts, Professor of Philosophy at Melbourne University, and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at the Central University of Tibetan Studies.

Thomas Tymoczko was, until his death, Professor of Philosophy at Smith College. He was editor of New Directions in the Philosophy of Mathematics.

Absolutely wonderful

This is, technically, an edited version of the first edition. However, it is a radical change from the original, fixing all of the first edition's problems. It is always clear, always helpful, and always entertaining. Even if I had missed class and had an assignment to do, all I had to do was read the chapter thoroughly and it made sense. My professors told us that in case they didn't make sense, to simply turn to the book. And it worked. When I was in doubt, this book was my lifeline. I cannot explain how much I love this book.
However, if you are not a person who enjoys being challenged and enjoys having to mull a problem over in your head, you should never take a class that uses this book. This book was designed to encourage logical thinking - which it does. This book (and the course that used it) entirely changed the way I think. I see the world differently now - logically.

This is the required text book of my college so I bought it along with some other logic books. Surprised to see that this one is amazingly good!!!!
It is a combination of traditional symbolic logic and cutting edge topics in the area. I love the style of humor in the book, and the thought-provoking
paradox as well!

well done and money well spent

We haven't lived in Oregon all that long and having a guide that will shorten our search is very helpful. Gem Trails is very accurate with easy to follow maps and many colorful pictures that help to enhance the experience. We checked out areas that are close to our residence and we were not disspointed. We are anxious to explore further.

Our #1 for Oregon Collecting (and fun to read too!)

We've used GToO for years now and are very happy with this new edition. Index & TOC are well written so the book's easy to use. Five appendices have detailed extra info, web links to some outstanding websites, and clear-to-the-layperson detail on the legalities of what can and cannot be collected which I highly recommend for novice collectors.
As someone mentioned, directions can be a bit vague but don't let that stop you - we've always found the sites. In previous editions there was some headscratching and backtracking to find the sites, but author Romaine has added GPS coordinates & better maps, making it much easier.
We don't leave on a collecting trip without this in our gear.

Good history, great business analysis

Good read about construction of a commuter rail line through southern Westchester County, NY. Its excellent historical references and good writing should make this interesting for non-railfans. Harwood's strength is his insightful business analysis of why and how this very expensive line got built and then abandoned. Reads like a good mystery novel in parts, with Harwood zooming back from fascinating minutiae about routing choices to J.P. Morgan's strategic -- but not entirely clear -- plans for his railroad investments. Fun to read.

Coming up on 100th Aniversary of its opening, and having explored some of the abandoned ROW / stations back in the 1970's, I wanted to learn about this railroad. Excellent written book going over the dubious payments and "strange" decisions made that doomed this endeavor before it started. Would have liked to see more of the construction photos and any taken during the scrapping, but there are other books dedicated to that.

About the Author
Don Raskin graduated from Syracuse University with an MBA in marketing and went to work in brand management for Unilever in New York City. Raskin worked on several health and beauty brands for Unilever before moving on to Whitehall Laboratories to work in new products and on the Advil brand. Awesome! I've gotten a lot of compliments and requests for the pattern!

I've looked for a hooked cape/cloak pattern for years. I was beginning to think I would have to take a stab at trying to design my own. Most of the patterns I did find were knitting patterns and I prefer to crochet. Finished the cape in a week or so and wore it out and got lots of compliments and a couple of requests for the pattern. It's warm without being too hot or heavy and will be great with a dress in the winter!
