About the Author
Sharol Tilgner is a licensed naturopathic physician in Eugene, Oregon. She graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1990. However her history as an herbalist goes back farther than that. She started her herbal career in 1979. She founded and is currently the president of Wise Woman Herbals, Inc., a 12 year old company which supplies more than 300 herbal products to health care practitioners. Dr. Tilgner was the Director of the Portland Naturopathic Clinic pharmacy for more than two years. She spent three years molding an old cattle ranch into an organic herb farm that is now called Shalimar Gardens. She is currently molding a second farm into a herbal teaching site. She is the editor of Herbal Transitions, associate editor of Medical Herbalism and has produced 2 herbal videos entitled Edible and Medicinal Herbs, Volume 1, and Edible and Medicinal Herbs, Volume II". Dr. Tilgner is a nationally known speaker who lectures at medical colleges and conferences across the United States. She also promotes and sponsors The Pacific NW Herbal Symposium each spring. Her most recent contribution to the herbal world is her new book called Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth.

A lovely book

I was very pleased when I received this book. It has a very good breath of information on herbs within it.

A brief chapter on the medicinal properties and actions of herbs, with multiple examples of herbs in each category, is followed by a good materia medica. It only covers 160-170 herbs, and so is not the most comprehensive one available, but each entry is a very good mix of modern medical and traditional herbal details: the part(s) used, taste/smell, "tendencies" (e.g. cooling/drying), dosage, mental picture and specific indications.

There are good size sections on herbal formulae for different conditions (mentioning both appropriate adjunct therapies and any cautions that should be observed) and also on how to make different herbal preparations. There are even a few small chapters on dosages.

All in all, a very good buy !

This book is very helpful if you are into using herbs and tinctures for treatment. It's actually the book that my naturopath uses, now I just skip the expensive doctor visit and check my book.

As a busy naturopathic physician who sees a wide range of patients, I found Dr. Tilgner's book invaluable in researching effective formulas.
Combining both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine perspectives, Herbal Medicine will be useful to traditional herbalists as well as TCM practitioners.
This would be a primary reference book for conventional medical offices who seek to work with their patients using natural therapies.
But Herbal Medicine is not just for the professional. Dr. Tilgner's straight-forward writing style makes the book easy to use for those new to herbal remedies. Instructions on how and when to take, and not take, the herbs are clear and meet high standards for safe use.
The directions for concocting and using formulas are concise. And I know from using them in my practice, the formulas are extremely effective.
The section on making tinctures, salves, teas and capsules provides clear instructions and information for either creating your own remedies at home, or working in an herbal pharmacy.

The canonical OA welding and cutting handbook.

If you gas weld, buy this edition of this classic reference. Written and beautifully illustrated when OA was king, it is thorough and informative.

Most of the Purox/Oxweld/Lined torches shown are either still made or available from Ebay used. I also use and collect torches and the fit and ergonomics of those brands are superb. Whatever brand you use, buy this book. It's a great training reference.

Found this to be an excellent primer both on the history of oxy-acetylene welding and cutting and how to operate the torches for, brazing,welding and cutting. Now I can instruct my wife on how to turn on the small airco welding torch, set the flame based on metal and filler rod and have a go at creating her garden sculpture. Written around the Second World War.

I waited almost 20 years to get this!

Back in "96" i walked down to my local comic store and picked up an old copy of "Eerie" magazine which was published around late 1979. I was reading it and came across an old ad for graphic novels long out of print. And one of those turned out to be the comic adaptation of the movie "Alien". I wish i could have gotten my hands on that( since i was a huge fan of the movie) I figured i wouldn't have any luck finding it or if i did , it would cost me alot of money. As luck would have it, many years later ,20th century fox released the movie" prometheus" and rereleased this to ti in with the movie. It's written by Archie Goodwin and drawn by Walter Simonson. The adaptation is very faithful to the movie and it also has a few deleted scenes that had i bought this when it originally came out in "79", wouldn't even have known existed till dvd technolgy hit the market when they released the 20th anniversery of Alien on dvd years back. The art work is fantastic and they tried to get the likeness of the characters right. If you are a fan of the movie like i am and you
are into graphic novels, you might enjoy this.

"ALIEN" Art Edition exceeds expectations...

I'm a rabid fan of IDW publishing and their "Artists Edition" reprints of original art comic stories, and was excited when I saw the solicitation for this Walt Simonson edition from Titan Books. The cover itself is a knockout, the tone and texture of the reprinted internal pages are amazing, crystal clear with warts and all, the occasional scratch out or white out marks leap off the page. This was one of the first true graphic novel adaptations of a major motion picture, and Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson had made a name for themselves as a team during their stellar run on DC comics "Manhunter" series that ran in Detective comics, and the team brings an epic moodiness and tone to this story. The adaptation is so well done that over 30 years later, none of the books original impact is lost. Toss in facsimile pages of the original Goodwin script, and some gorgeously colored Simonson pages and you have a world-class package. This edition falls squarely in "must-have" territory, it's that good.

Definite must-buy!

This is a reprint of the 1979 Heavy Metal Comics comic book adaption of Alien. Original copies are few and far between, with prices rising for beat up copies. Save your money, this is exactly the same book, unless you're that much of a collector. As far as the book itself, it's pretty large in size, height-wise. It's a thin book, well bound. It reads much like any comic adaption of a film. There's a great attention to detail and the format of the comic is interesting, certain events take up most of the page and go out of the panels. The colors are great and a lot of the characters look pretty much true to their screen counterparts. As far as I can tell it doesn't stray from the movie's story at all, though I imagine many fans like myself would like to see the Director's Cut being the main source for books such as this. All in all it is an excellent book and worth the money!

Possibly the single most important book for any human being to read. "Man is the only creature that must be taught how to live."

This book should be required reading for doctors and laypersons, as well as part of every school curriculum. It gets to the heart of the causes of disease and gives a very scientific overview of how each system of the body is set up to facilitate the proper functioning of the muscular system, and vice versa. Combine this book with Sandow on physical training: a study in the perfect type of the human form, and one will have the resources necessary to construct a perfectly healthy body, totally resistant to internal disease and, for the most part, microbial infection. This text, Life is Movement, and the previously mentioned Sandow on Physical Training represent the cumulative life work of one of the greatest anatomist, doctor, man and philosopher to have ever lived. Not a single one of his words or ideas should be dismissed without careful research and consideration. For the price of a couple of dollars, you do yourself a disservice by not purchasing this book, no matter who you are, what you are interested in, or how you found this review. If you are reading this, I urge you to purchase this book, and once you have read it you may well agree that this information is some of the most valuable collected by modern science.

Delicate Balance between the Two Subjects

This book was developed for a class taught at Rice University that covered both Functional Analysis and Probablity/Statistics. It required the development of this book that gives a good introduction to functional analysis for statisticians and an introduction to statistics for functional analysts.

The book is positioned so that it can be used for both groups of students. This is a delicate balance that can teach introductions (graduate student level) to both fields without leaving the other half of the class bored. As such it is not a text on either subject, but is inbetween. The sections on statistics are written from a viewpoint familiar to the functional analyst, not from that of a mathematician. And the reverse is true in the sections on functional analysis. This is to complete the view of the two groups typically taking the class.

This is a graduate level course, it provides relatively little background information to the basic mathematics needed.
