Each narrative section has clearly stated learning objectives that are tied to the digital tools which drive the program’s assessment. Yet, we realize that while history instructors want students to know basic historical facts, the actual goal of the course is improving student’s critical thinking abilities. Our Critical Missions develop analysis skills through the examination of maps, primary sources and the completion of a written argument. In addition, several other assignment types within McGraw-Hill’s Connect drive the development of analysis skills and are also tied directly to learning objectives.

About the Author
Suzanne Marchand obtained her BA from UC Berkeley (1984) and her MA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1986; 1992). She then taught for several years at Princeton (1991-99), where she received tenure. In 1999, she moved to LSU in Baton Rouge where she is Professor of Modern European Intellectual History. Her specialties are Modern German and Austrian Intellectual History, the history of classical scholarship, the history of cultural institutions (museums, universities, etc), the history of archaeology, and the history of aesthetic thought. She has published two books, Down from Olympus: Archaeology and Philhellenism in Germany (Princeton University Press, 1996), and German Orientalism in the Age of Empire: Religion, Race and Scholarship (Cambridge University Press, 2009). She has also coauthored an innovative and successful textbook on world history (Worlds Together, Worlds Apart, published by W. W. Norton), edited two volumes of essays (Proof and Persuasion: Essays on Authority, Objectivity, and Evidence, with Elizabeth Lunbeck; and Germany at the Fin de Siecle, with David Lindenfeld), and written numerous other shorter pieces. She has two children, Charles (14) and Henry (11); her husband, Victor Stater, is an historian of early modern Britain, and chair of the history department at LSU.

Paul Edward Dutton is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and of The Medieval Academy of America, and the Jack and Nancy Farley University Professor in History at Simon Fraser University. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and a doctorate in medieval studies from the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (P.I.M.S.). Among his books are The Politics of Dreaming in the Carolingian Empire, Charlemagne's Mustache and Other Cultural Clusters of A Dark Age, The Poetry and Paintings of the First Bible of Charles the Bald (with Herbert Kessler), and The Autograph of Eriugena (with Edouard Jeauneau). He is the general editor of three series of medieval studies at the University of Toronto Press and the critical editor of two Latin texts from the twelfth century.

But, please know, that it reads like a fairly advanced textbook (for North America audience)....I am very interested in the Bolivarian Revolution, so it was interesting to me. But, if you do not know much about LA or Bolivarian, you should probably start with something else, IMHO

Poor Quality

Legend of Legaia is an incredible game. But this guide is not. The only good thing about this guide is the arts list for each character. That's about the only help you'll really get from it.

Compared to other RPG guides, Prima's "Legend of Legaia" guide is shallow. Where are the maps? The comprehensive items lists? The bestiary? The secrets? They're all absent from this guide.

The walkthrough was perhaps the worst part. There's nothing but text and screenshots. Some screens are in the wrong place, and I began to wonder how exactly anyone could get anything from this guide. There were no maps, and they didn't mention the items I could obtain in an area. They mention items on the way to the target, but never anything off the beaten path.

Then there were the boss strategies. They had HP listings for some of them. Other times they either didn't have HP listed or they said something like "He has around 13,000 HP" which in turn doesn't tell me a whole lot. At least some of the strategies were good, but they didn't mention the basic tip you give anyone who goes at Legend of Legaia. You heal almost every turn (even at GameFAQs they mention that in nearly every FAQ).

The guide was also absent of basic enemy information. Where was the bestiary? What could I steal from the enemy? What did the enemy drop? Better yet, WHAT ENEMIES WILL I RUN INTO IN A CERTAIN AREA? The guide doesn't say.

Then there are the appendices in the back. They had a list of seru magic (not very handy, we know what enemies are seru just by looking for a symbol next to them in the game) and an accessories list. The accessories list and whatnot were out of order. There WAS an items list, but again: out of order. They could've at least put it in alphabetical order to make it easier. Secrets items (such as the Chicken Heart, and Chicken King) got little or no mention at all.

The entire guide read like an FAQ... only with screenshots. Seriously, if you want to MASTER Legend of Legaia, this guide isn't the way to do it. If you just want to beat the game without getting anything, the guide isn't even needed. Save your money and go to GameFAQs for help. There people will actually help you master the game and find everything. Oh, and there the people actually HAVE secrets.

In one word: poor

The hint book is a good walkthrough of the game Legend of Legaia. The Legend of Legaia is a good game that seems to be a watered down version of Final Fantasy VII. Since the game is a "watered down" RPG, there aren't any big secrets or puzzles that need to be discussed. Unfortunately that is all that this hint book really covers.
The monster list doesn't include basic stats (hit points, magic points, items) which is common to all other RPG hint books. The items list is erronious in parts. There is no discussion as to battle tactics, or how to beef up your characters.
The walkthrough is fairly well done, but there are still issues with this. The main one, in my mind, is that there are no maps! One would think that if you are going to pay money for a guide they could at least supply maps. There are also errors in the hint book (most notably times in which objects become avialable). My final gripe with the book is that the last two dungeons (the most difficult ones) have no walkthrough, just a couple of cursory words.
All in all the majority of the walkthrough is done well. There are no battle tactics, no maps, and erronious information, however. My adivice would be to find a walkthrough on the web, it will save you time, and probably be more accurate.

A good general overview, but lacks important specifics.

All in all, I was only marginally impressed by Prima's Legend of Legaia strategy guide. True, the book does take the reader through a semi-comprehensive walkthrough of the game, and does point out several of the important little tips that might have otherwise been overlooked. However, it also does not even touch some of the most practical reasons to buy a strategy guide. The reason I bought the book was so that I could have a list of enemy statistics and information (ie. what they dropped, what you could steal from them, etc.) at my disposal while I searched for some hard to find goodies. Unfortunately, the book does not contain such information, stopping at the baseline attacks and locations of the enemies. Also missing were several side-quests and special items, most notably the Mettle Goblet and the Juggernaut Evil Medallion. Overall: Good book to get you through the game without any of the more glitzy possible items. Leaves a lot of little stuff for you to look elsewhere for.

David Pardey is director and founder of QMD Ltd, a consultancy for learning providers and funding agencies on marketing and quality systems; research and development for LSCs, awarding bodies and sector skills councils (including the Institute for Leadership and Management, City and Guilds, SkillSet and the Management Standards Council); the development of learning resources, journalism and other commissioned writing. Prior to this he worked as a marketing manager in the consumer durables industry, teaching in FHE, and as a Staff Tutor at the former FE Staff College (now LSDA). David is also a consultant for the LSDA Support for Success programme, focussing particularly on employer engagement, and was a member of the Council for Excellence in Management and Leadership working party on the provision of management development in the UK outside the HE sector. David writes widely on marketing and management issues. He is author of Team Leading (ILM: 2004), Mindchange (Management Books 2000: 2005, with Jan Charles), Marketing for Schools (Kogan Page:1992), Making Sense of Marketing (Macmillan: 1989, with Peter Davies).

Well, at least I understand what the mechanic says and whether s/he is lying to him based on the reasoning...Cheap book but useful.

This book is excellent and I fully recommend it to any manager who's interested in improving themselves and their people. It covers fundamental concepts that every manager needs to be good at--building relationships with staff, providing feedback, coaching, and delegation.

The best part about this book (and all the Manager Tools resources on their website and free podcast) is that they're *actionable*. You can read a chapter from this book tonight and walk into work tomorrow morning and start doing things that will increase the effectiveness of your team immediately. Becoming more effective isn't easy--but the systems laid out in this book make it simple--just add effort!

Took me years to get this information, now you can have it in a book!

There is no better management training than Manager-Tools! Believe me, I've looked...I've used their trinity as well as their hiring recommendations at both my ambulance service and in the hospital with great results. The information in the book is actionable and will tell you not only what to do but how to do it. I've been listening to their weekly podcasts since 2008 and I have been to two conferences in Chicago by them. This book will give you a jump start on learning what took me years! Buy it today!

Effective is better than efficient

Are you a 'results first' manager? Maybe a 'results first' person who's headed for a management role? Then this book + the ten years of effective, actionable, podcasts that go along with "the Effective Manager" are for you. Learn the four keys to results through relationships. Learn them without all the fluff you'll get elsewhere. This is simply the best advice you'll get -- anywhere -- on how to obtain great results as a manager. It works for me. It'll work for you, too.
