Russian Orthodox Spirituality 101

"Flavian" is written by Archpriest Alexander Torik about a heiromonk (priest-monk) named Fr. Flavian. The story centers on a man of the world in modern day Moscow who inadvertently bumps into an old college friend. The friend, now a priest in the Russian Orthodox (Eastern Orthodox Christian) Church, with the new name of Flavian which was given to him when he was tonsured a monk, is barely recognizable to him. He is invited to visit Fr. Flavian's parish in the rural countryside far outside Moscow. There a whole new world opens up to him and he rediscovers the traditional faith of the Russian people who have practiced their Orthodox traditions for over 1,000 years, even through the bitter trials of the bloody persecution by the godless authorities during the 70 years of the Communist yolk.

Written in narrative style, this book is a simple, yet comprehensive insight into the day-to-day practice of the Christian faith by humble rural people and the God-centered mystical theology of Orthodox Christianity. "Flavian" brings the reader face to face with the spiritualism that has been stripped away from traditional Christianity, first by the Roman Catholics after they split from the Orthodox Church in 1054, then in subsequent Protestant spin-offs from Catholicism, and now with thousands of do-it-yourself Christian churches and non-Christian sects (e.g. Mormans and Jehovah's Witnesses) until--with rare exception--the soul of Christianity outside of the Orthodox Church has been obliterated.

I highly recommend "Flavian" for readers who have never encountered Orthodox Christian spirituality as well as "cradle" Orthodox who have lost their way, drifting away from Christ and His commandment: "But seek first His Kingdom and His Righteousness..." (Matthew 6:33), through nationalism, self-adulation, superficial piety, church affairs, theology, and other non-salvific minutia. It is truly a breath of fresh air for the soul.

This is an excellent read!

This is an excellent read!! I was taken so quickly into the main character of the story. You will be moved, even if you are unfamiliar with Orthodox services, the beauty and description will draw you. The book is deeply moving as one you are able to look inside and see yourself. The characters are realistic and the view into the rural Russia was wonderful. The book will end and you will be wishing for more. I wish that the other Father Flavian books were translated to English.

A Hipster's Guide to the World of Bebop

Having wanted the Japanese version of Newtype's 100% Cowboy Bebop for some time now, I was pleasantly surprised to see a smaller guide in English at my local bookstore. It didn't jump out at me, that's for sure. Measuring in at about a slim 7 x 5.5 inches, the book fits basically anywhere you want it to, including coffee tables or small bookshelves and the likes. But don't let the size fool you, it's packed with basically anything anyone would want to know about the first five episodes of the series, from basic information about the characters to tidbits about seemingly minor incidents and the lyrics of the songs in English and Romanji (phonetic Japanese). There's a small section after the overview of the episodes that goes over the lives of Spike, Jet, and the rest of the gang. Ein and Spike are personally my favorite characters in the whole series, and even Ein gets his own character bio. The print quality is average to above average and the guide is littered with pictures and captions for Sessions 1-5 of the anime. The 14 pages of character designs in black and white in the back of the book are a nice complement to the colorful layouts on the rest of the pages. They seriously show nearly every, if not every, character shown in Cowboy Bebop episodes 1-5. I have a few Gundam data books in Japanese, so it's nice to finally have an anime guide in English that I can read as well as look at the pictures. While the quality might not hold up to other Newtype publications such as the big honkin' Newtype 100% Neon Genesis Evagelion guide (in Japanese), I found the Cowboy Bebop Anime Guide 1 to be something no serious fan should be without. This should definately pique the interest of anyone who still hasn't seen the series as well as fit nicely into any fan's anime or manga library.

Great source for information...

The 'cowboy Bebeop Anime Guide 1' -the first out of six volumes- starts off with a few character bios, then gives summaries and information on the first six episodes of the series. The last few chapters deal with the setting of Cowboy Bebop universe, with a chapter explaining about bounty hunters along with files on the items used by the characters and lots of sketches on everything from the types of spacesuits used to the character of Vicious.
The information is interesting, but most of it can be found if you have the DVDs. This book would make a good gift for Cowboy Bebop fans who have everything else or for people who need the information at their fingertips, like fan fiction writers. Lots of color pictures right from the anime help fill out the work but it still feels kind of weak.

Not impressed, if this was half the price, then its worth it

I'm a huge Cowboy Bebop fan, I own the series on DVD and preordered the movie a long time ago. I bought this book thinking that it would be full of cool facts and info that you wouldn't pick up from the actual DVD, but it's really just a synopsis of each episodes with a bunch of pictures from each episode. There are a few pages of extras, but they are mostly some rough sketches and short bios, nothing really worth the price of this book.
If this was half the price, it might be worth it, but even then I would only suggest this for the absolute collector that must have every Cowboy Bebop related piece of merchandise out there, regardless of quality. For the casual fan, or even the more fanatic, it's simply not worth the money.
