About the Author
Edward Johnston (1872–1944) is regarded as one of the fathers of calligraphy and his books and teachings are credited with�reviving the art of modern penmanship and lettering. The sans-serif Johnston typeface that appeared throughout the London Underground prior to the 1980s�was his most prominent design. Johnston influenced a generation of British calligraphers and typographers, notably Eric Gill, and his students founded the Society of Scribes & Illuminators.

Father of Calligraphic Revival

This is an excellent volume by Edward Johnston, the individual responsible for the rediscovery of the broad edged pen and the revival of Calligraphy. He was the founder of "The Society of Scribes and Illuminators", London. This was his first published book and gives an excellent background for the student of calligraphy into the basic knowledge, formats and techniques of the scribes who produced the most beautiful books and documents in history. I would call this the "Bible" of the true craft. It is not a modern book with flashy photos or artwork. It is not from the perspective of a modern artist, learning to incorporate lettering into "art pieces". It is a volume which teaches you the basic historic fundamentals of lettering, layout, illumination, etc., geared to the production of books and documents. I highly recommend it.

Unreadable in Kindle version

The book is a wonderful, in-depth study of how to teach yourself what's in the title. Don't be turned away by first being presented with how to prepare a feather as a quill pen. They were still in use when this was written, you can still purchase goose feathers and follow the instructions (as I've done) to create a wonderful pen, or just skip it. This book is not a quick "teach yourself calligraphy in 30 minutes " but more like a college course that begins with the principles needed for a deeper understanding of the craft.

Even though I've read my Dover paperback version several times over the years, I can't read the Kindle version. Chapter, section, and other division titles and marks are scattered throughout the text of every page; not in one piece, but as individual words. I've been able to struggle through some pretty bad Kindle versions, but I'm going to delete this one. I get angry every time I see it in my library and remember I was charged for a book that obviously never passed under a human eye before being offered for sale.

Good book, very detailed and informative. But i warn you, the images in the kindle version are disrupted to say the least, I regret not paying the shipping and waiting because trying to discover the illustration will grant you a large headache and great frustration.

Almost like a memoir rather than a fiction. A lot of detail related to the OPP processes, makes the story move more slowly, and not always necessary for plot development, although interesting. The "back and forth" from cop to crook keeps the interest going forward.

About the Author
DWIGHT L. MOODY (1837-1899) was a highly acclaimed late 19th century evangelist. He founded the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago in 1886 and the Bible Institute Colportage Association, now Moody Publishers, in 1894. From training women, to reaching out to lost children, to bridging the gap between denominations, D.L. Moody was unlike any other. He is author of a number of books including Christ in You, Heaven, Men God Challenged, and Spiritual Power. His life is also chronicled in A Passion for Souls: The Life of D.L. Moody by Lyle Dorsett. He and his wife, Emma, had two children.

Helpful resource for our modern era

First off I have to say – I loved this book!! This old 1880 classic by D.L.Moody is filled with wake up calls to the modern era and church as to why the power and anointing is often lacking while providing ingredients for spiritual success. Because God is not a respecter of persons it appears key issues are addressed to help remedy those that have fallen asleep spiritually. DL Moody believes we would have been spared many dark hours if we had only been willing to let the Spirit of God be our counselor and guide. Here he describes the object of this book: "… To help others to know the source of true power that both their zeal and their knowledge may be of increased service in the masters work. "

Even deeply seasoned Christians will gain value in this book as the Holy Spirit's partnership and ways of being grieved are uncovered. No man can be a coworker with God, he states, without the Spirit of God imparting love. Lost hope too is a reflection that man has gotten out of communion with God.

So what are the ingredients for God's service?
"When a man gets so full that he can't hold anymore than he is just ready for God's service. He is not going to give this power to an inpatient man; He is not going to give it to a selfish man; He will never give it to an ambitious man who's aim is selfish, till first emptied of self; emptied of pride and of all worldly thoughts. Let it be God's glory and not our own that we seek, and when we get to that point, how speedily the Lord will bless us for good. "

A former civil lawyer, a teacher of moral theology, and a specialist in marriage, Burke found himself unexpectedly called in 1986 to be a judge of the Roman Rota, the High Court of the Church. He began his work there precisely at a moment when theologians and canonists alike found themselves grappling with interpreting and finding the practical application of new magisterial teachings on matrimony - teachings that seemed to some to represent an almost total rupture with tradition.

Central and particularly controversial issues were the new definition of marriage itself and of its ends, the "personalist" way of expressing the nature of marital consent; and, not least, the concept of the bonum coniugum, "the good of the spouse", as a co-principal end of marriage.

Msgr. Burke, well attuned to John Paul II's personalist theology of marriage, sensed the need to seek the roots of these apparently new concepts in the Bible, in Tradition, and particularly in St. Augustine (in whom, despite many modern impressions to the contrary, he sees the first defender of the goodness of the marital covenant). The result over the past twenty five years has been an impressive body of work in theological as well as canonical reviews.

Cormac Burke is one of the few who "gets it".

Abysmal training in many seminaries has led to a generation (or two) of priests that simply have no clue what the church TRULY teaches on marriage and annulment. The Cross of Christ and its relation to marriage, the sanctifying grace that is one of the beautiful gifts to married couples and the way back to a reasonably "happy" marriage are all found in the TRUE teachings of the Catholic Church. Priests today are simply not equipped to properly catechize the faithful in this area.

Cormac Burke understands the TRUE teaching of the Catholic Church on marriage and annulment. This enlightening book will be an eye opener for any priest giving "pastoral care" to someone considering divorce or annulment.

relief!

i love this book! i referenced it while building a zero energy garage apartment for my thesis and it served as an excellent guide. i find it particularly useful since information is broken down systematically instead of the usual cat-and-mouse chase websites and other books offer. this is a must-have for green designers.

A timely publication

The campaign of environmentally healthy space has begun gently as a drive against asbestos and lead-based paints. Over time this idea has grown in dimension to encompass elimination of many other harmful construction materials. Exclusion of damaging materials from the very start of the design ensures an environment for safe and healthy living. This methodology, often called the "environmentally friendly design", has gained serious attention from design professionals like Architects, Engineers, Space Planners and Community Activists, all of whom have come forward to implement and enrich this idea.
This book has added a new dimension to this thought. It has drawn our attention to building products, furniture and furnishings, which undeniably constitute a large part of our occupiable spaces. It makes us aware of putting as much importance on selection process of these elements in creation of spatial standards for a safe and healty living.
I would like to thank the authors of this book for triggering new thoughts with this pioneering work. Thong overdue, this definitely opens up a new horizon. I believe that this school of thought should so our civilization may benefit from this approach.
