This is a great book for anybody who has questions about the context, background and stories of the bible. It answered many questions that I always had and sometimes wasn't even aware of. The book is written in an interesting, engaging style that does not require a scholarly approach. Highly recommended.

Eye-Opening

I never understood before. My mother's whole family is a nest of narcissists. It was tough growing up. I'm nothing like them, I take after my father's side of the family. It was so bizarre. It was like they (figuratively) liked to "bathe in people's blood". I just could not, for the life of me, figure out why someone would want to. I mean, come on already. How can they possibly WANT to hurt someone? To slice and dice and just cut somebody to pieces. I simply could not ignore the evidence of my own eyes, but it all seemed so unreal. I was just a child, I was innocent and helpless. They were so vicious, they spat venom, they bit and snarled and ripped and ground and stomped and kicked and screamed and slashed and growled and spat and glared and howled and scratched and punched and slapped and flung and smacked and would not stop and blamed everyone else and loved every minute, every second of it. Their eyes would shine, their cheeks and foreheads were so, so pink, they would, I don't even know what you would call it, they would giggle-snarl. (It was decidedly an unpleasant thing to hear.) They... drooled. You knew when they were going to start in, because they would start drooling. Just a little bit, in the corner. Drool. I started understanding a little bit when that song came out when I was a teenager, "Anticipation". Whenever I see someone drooling, or unfairly jumping all over someone, I can still hear that song. I never liked that song. I stopped liking ketchup for years because of that song.

Thanks for this book. I am understanding for the first time what motivates this impossible behavior. It's still ugly as sin, but I'm gleaning a bit of why, which I just never had before. Thanks.

Fuel is "spot on" with what narcissists do and why they act like they do. Written by a narcissist, it gives great insight as to why and what goes on in their devious minds. I found it so in tune with my own experiences. It's amazing how you know they are up to no good, but once you read why and what they are thinking, it's a real revelation. Thanks to the author for sharing his world.
Having been in a "relationship" (if there is such a thing with a narc) with a narcissist for 6 years I have to say this book is very enlightening and again it details situations very much like ones I had with my narcissistic boyfriend and now I know why he did the things he did and even more importantly what he gained from it. I had several "wow" moments while reading this Fuel and I found it extremely interesting. This is a must read if you have been involved with one of these individuals and you are the least bit curious what makes them tick or, even worse, how the negative emotions they evoked in you were giving them the most benefit! Our suffering is their best fuel! Read Fuel and don't be their fuel!

Totally grabs you and sucks you right in!

This was my first book by Gwynn White and I couldn't put it down. I stayed up all night just to finish it and can't wait to read the rest of the series to find out what happens next. I just adore Lynx and her spunky feisty persona.

African steampunk fantasy at its best!

Rebels Honor offers a great new voice in fantasy with the world building strongly reminiscent of Africa. Lynx is a strong and interesting heroine and the concepts of advanced tech fallen into misuse and largely forgotten is both intriguing and central to the plot. The opening chapters of the book are extremely strong and create a vivid and realistic view of a world divided, with Lynxes clan, village and ostrich hunting jumping out of the page at the reader. In the remainder of the book there is interesting misdirection and misrepresentation of characters which increases the sense of intrigue as well as anticipation - you as the reader know something about each character that the characters collectively do not and it is a heady experience. Axel is a wonderful and straightforward match to Lynx and you find yourself really cheering for him as the story progresses, but he is not as complex and layered as Lukan and this is definitely the character to watch! This was an easy and enjoyable read and comes highly recommended.

Well worth it

This is the first book I have read from Gywnn White and it was good. It's not a typical romantic story, though there is romance in the plot, and bonus points for it not being hard out political either. Timeline wise can almost be compare to the Shannara series from Terry Brooks in that it happens way into the future after a great war threatened the whole of civilisation; but in this case some technology still exits. The main characters are complex and well developed and continue to grow throughout the book and even in the second one which I am currently reading. Lynx, as a heroine, shows that complexity and growth really well as she goes from being a raider in the Norrin tribe to being the crown princess and future empress. She finds out that nothing is as cut and dried as she though and has to revise quite a bit of her idealism and learn to maneuver among all the greys.

About the Author

Sharlene Sayegh received her Ph.D. in History and Critical Theory from the University of California, Irvine. She has taught in the Department of History at California State, Long Beach for over 14 years, where she also serves as the department's core curriculum coordinator. She is the University's Director of Program Review and Assessment, helping to guide the campus into best practices for student learning and engagement. A winner of the university's Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award as well as the World History Association's Teaching Prize, she remains committed to enhancing student learning and to sharing ideas about effective teaching with her colleagues. She is currently working on a micro history of women and business in eighteenth-century London.

Eric Altice received his Ph.D. in History from UCLA and taught at California State University, Long Beach for several years. He is currently on the American History faculty for UCLA's Global Classroom/Social Science Education in Asia program in Nanjing, China.

An Opportunity Lost

There are certainly many positives about this historiography primer. The early chapters, in particular, do a commendable job providing an overview of the professionalization of the discipline and the emergence of scientific history. However, as do the grand majority of these primers, this one completely loses any sense of audience by the time it moves into its treatment of 20th C. trends in the field. And, as per usual (re: Appleby, et al.), specific terms that are critical to understanding particular concepts (say, discourse) are referred to haphazardly, even relied upon by the authors, throughout the text before they are actually explained to the reader (p. 99 in this case). By the time students struggle through the chapter on post-structuralism, they are simply at a loss to follow the ideas appearing here. Thus, my question is simply: for whom is this book written? If, as I suspect, it is aimed at undergraduates, this will likely frustrate instructors. On the one hand, the authors occasionally "nail it," as they did in my opinion with the short but to the point chapter on environmental history, and then turn around say, in the next chapter, and utterly butcher the thing... I mean, WTF are students supposed to take out of the diagram on "hospitality" to explain deconstruction on p. 101? This is obviously well-intentioned and at times, I dare say, even brilliant, but the complete lack of any sense of audience makes this, on balance, an opportunity lost.

I've had sayegh for a class, and she is just as lively in person as she writes in this book. Definitely a must if you have to take historical theory! Even if you think you can get by without it. historical theory can be super hard to understand and this book puts it in plain terms. Best of all, each section is very to the point. No lengthy academic repeating.
