From the Inside Flap
"A well structured reference. If you are unclear how best to approach a modelling task or you are ready to reconsider some of your modelling habits, this is a useful bag of tricks and thoughts which can greatly simplify your task."
—Dominik Geller; Head of Corporate Risk Management; F. Hoffmann –La Roche AG

"Michael Rees has written a financial modelling book that is exceptional in its clarity, balance of theory and practice, and its abundance of invaluable examples. Comprehensive and application-driven in its topical coverage, it is one of the very few books that address the modelling process itself. Michael Rees enables even the desperate readers to design, structure and build models appropriate for their situation and provides them with a sound and practical foundation to bring financial modelling to life."
—Johannes Klose, Principal, Allianz Risk Transfer

"With this outstanding book the reader gets a comprehensive guideline on how to build financial models by showing a path from theoretical approaches to more realistic models. I have never seen such a good explanation of the basic aspects of financial modelling and the presentation of risk modelling including the application of statistical functions. Mike combines visual explanations with mathematical functions and statements where necessary. Supported with a lot of examples this gives the reader a quick understanding of the different topics. The logical development from risk modelling to the analysis of real options is extremely helpful and to my knowledge has never been published in such a form. From my daily practise I would recommend this unique book to every professional or student who is engaged in business modelling and especially interested in risk management."
—D. Martin Erdmann, Director Risk Management, Infineon Technologies AG

"Michael Rees has hit the nail on the head. In Financial Modelling in Practice, he has addressed many common problems business professionals face in accurately representing their real-life situations as Excel spreadsheets. Modelling is crucial for informed decision-making, as is taking uncertainty and risk into account. Michael Rees addresses these needs in a practical, easily understood way that is both robust and accessible."
—Randy Heffernan, Vice President, Palisade Corporation

"An excellent book which presents advanced financial modelling tools and simulations, and applies them to modern aspects of financial management. As a renowned expert in modelling, Michael Rees develops efficient techniques for simulation and sensitivity analysis within an Excel and Excel add-on framework using many useful and transparent applications in the context of company valuation, derivative business and risk management, enabling the reader to develop good models themselves. A unique book which is highly instructive and motivating."
—Professor Dr Dieter Gramlich, University of Cooperative Education, Heidenheim, Germany

"Mike Rees's book fills an important gap in the literature on how to model financial data. It not only provides a whole host of useful suggestions on how to design, structure, build and analyse models; including tips on how use some of the more advanced functionality in Excel, but also in a clear and concise way explains how to include uncertainty in to these models. During the last few years many business's environment have changed, creating the need to explicitly include uncertainty into their decision making rather than hide behind simple (and often flawed) assumptions of what the future may hold. Mike clearly understands the importance of this area and includes several sections which provide an excellent introduction to anyone starting to apply these types of techniques in their financial models for the first time. It is the combination of best practice modelling techniques, plenty of examples and the basics of some of the more advanced approaches that make this book a useful addition to anyone building financial models."
—Andrea Dickens, Decision Analysis Group Leader, Finance Excellence Unilever

How to Rev Up Your Financial Modeling Skills Set
By Serge J. Van Steenkiste
Michael Rees succeeds to a large extent in his endeavor of writing a text that addresses the financial modeling process instead of Excel functionality, financial theory, or mathematical models. To his credit, Rees has put together a large number of useful modeling examples in the CD-ROM that is sold with the text. Rees' book assumes that readers have at least an intermediate knowledge of both statistical and financial concepts.

After reviewing select Excel functions and tools relevant to financial modeling, Rees gives his audience of modelers many practical tips about how to design, structure, and build models that are relevant, accurate, and easily understandable. Whoever has experience with models will probably agree with Rees when he writes that the majority of models built are in practice of mediocre quality. Someone other than the author of the model will often experience several challenges in dealing with the model at hand, i.e., too much time spent on understanding the model, complexity of the auditing and validating processes, hard to share with others, over-reliance on the original modeler to maintain or use it, lack of clarity of objectives, and presence of errors and implicit assumptions.

Rees then goes into the modeling of financial statements that is often required in the world of corporate finance for forecasting profit and cash, assessing financing requirements, analyzing credit risk and valuation, etc. This chapter is a little gem. It contains many practical tips. Once again, readers will be reminded that there is not always 100% agreement on the definition of some financial concepts.

Rees then uses Palisade Corporation's add-ins @RISK and PrecisionTree for many modeling examples in the two chapters that he dedicates to risk modeling and real option modeling, respectively. Having some understanding of both statistical and financial concepts is particularly important here to benefit from reading both chapters. Probably, many readers with an advanced knowledge of Excel 2007 will regret that the above-mentioned functionality that Palisade Corporation offers has not yet been systematically integrated into at least Microsoft Office Professional.

Finally, Rees discusses the use of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in a range of practical financial modeling situations. Rees points out that many otherwise competent modelers never learn VBA. For this reason, Rees makes the assumption that his audience is not very familiar with VBA. Rees shows how macros, i.e., subroutines and user-defined functions, can be used in a variety of modeling contexts.

In conclusion, Rees has made a valuable contribution to the field of financial modeling. The CD-ROM that is sold with the text plays a key role in achieving this objective.

If You're An ASA-BV, CBA, or ABV, Buy This Book!
By Beau Butler
Despite using Excel for over 20 years - which included building complex valuation models for private equity and intangible asset valuations - I had a suspicion that I was not utilizing the program to its fullest extent.

Mike Rees - who has an impressive list of credentials, including winning the coveted Wilmott Prize awarded to the top graduate in the CQF program - has written a great book that addressed my concerns by going in-depth into the advanced functionality of Excel. For example, I knew very little of the advanced look-up functions, but after plowing through Chapter 1, I now feel relatively fluent in them and realize that I could have saved immense time when calculating federal and state income taxes on projected cash flow streams or in calculating future depreciation across multiple asset classes.

Although very familiar with cash flow modelling, Chapter 3 provided a new take on that topic and gave me some insights I hadn't thought of.

Chapters 4 & 5 were also very helpful in providing exposure to Palisade Corporation's @Risk and @Tree software. As another reviewer noted, a background in probability will make the examples easier to understand, but one can still benefit from a careful reading of the chapters. (As an aside, the Palisade software is easy to download in a trial version, and the sales/support team did a great job following up.) Chapter 6 provides a basic but solid foundation in VBA using the familiar Black-Scholes model. Using this book enabled me to tackle the Staunton/Jackson book on advanced Excel-VBA modeling, which dives much more heavily into VBA programming. In my practice, I have found the combination of this book and the Staunton/Jackson book to be more useful and relevant than the Beninga text, perhaps because of their practitioner orientation.

Thanks to Mike for his hard work in producing such a useful, thought-provoking tome. Anyone in the valuation practitioner space (i.e., the ASA-BV,CBA,ABV crowd) should carefully read this book and integrate its learnings into their own practice.

Clear, specific, infinitely useful
By M. Hoopes
I earned an MBA from a top tier school AND a CFA charter, neither of which taught me the essential skills of creating financial models the way they are done in real practice, with Excel. Michael Rees' text taught me the essentials and gave me the confidence to tackle any finance task.

general purpose skills
By W Boudville
To motivate you, the book starts with a lovely set of colour plates depicting various important problems that need massive computational power. Like predicting weather and climate, text to speech, voice recognition and space exploration. Indeed, the first examples, about weather, also grace the book's cover.

But the narrative quickly leaves behind the splendour of the plates. The usages of C++ are for raw computational applications. There is no implementation of a GUI. The user interface, to the extent that it exists, is confined to text: stdin, stdout, stderr. What the book tells you in part is that optimising number crunching is a different kettle of fish from writing glitzy GUI applications. Nowadays, many computer books seem to focus on the latter. In this sense, the book is a throwback to texts written before 1990. The need for a book like this has never gone away and it is good that the authors provide us with a fresh reminder.

The book lightly touches on various algorithms. For example, Newton Raphson for root finding, and Gaussian solutions of matrix equations. Mostly, you get an introduction to the capabilities of C++ for attacking problems.

I would recommend section 3.1 on algorithm development as the most important part of the book. It describes how to do top down design of a program. How to decompose a problem into smaller parts, making it easier to attack each part. The use and refinement of pseudocode is illustrated. A closely related task. These are vital general purpose skills for the professional programmer, that you should cultivate.

Excellent problem solving book!
By Jose Arroyo
As a computer science student who changed majors to computer engineering, this was one of the best programming books that I've read in college. It actually teaches you problem solving in a very straightforward manner. Not without flaws though, since there are quite a few typos and errors in the code of the programs in the book; however, everyone with at least some basic understanding of computer programming should be able to figure out what is wrong and fix them quite easily.

With the help of this book I was able to apply C++ to a lot of common problems encountered throughout all engineering fields; from statistics to simple physics and math problems. After taking the class, in which this book was used, this book has become one of my main references.

Good text, but the typos in problem sets and examples make it more frustrating than helpful.
By smiles
This book is required for my C++ class. Although it covers pertinent topics, and the text describes how to solve problems well, the examples are poorly written. They contain many errors, and don't explain why they are using certain functions. Not only does someone who is just learning C++ have to figure out where the errors are, but they have to figure out why they are using a certain code.
Not only do the examples have errors, but the problem sets have all sorts of typos. A general example: it will tell the student to alter the program they wrote for problem x on page y, and said problem doesn't exist. This results in searching the text for the proper problem. This causes errors in problems assigned by my professor, studying, and trying to find an example in class.
My husband holds a degree in computer science, and the book even annoys him.
At least buying it through Amazon saved me a lot of money compared to my school's bookstore, but still, I wish I didn't have to buy this for class. I have a library of more helpful books, and usually resort to them, or asking "the Internet" questions to clarify the text.

In easy-to-follow terminology, Lynch offers directions for sorting out the long shots from the no shots by spending just a few minutes with a company's financial statements. His advice for producing "tenbaggers" can turn a stock portfolio into a star performer!

Be smart and BUY this book!
By Lance Mead
This is the first book I ever read on investing. My cousin, Paul, who was a broker at Merrill Lynch, recommended it to me. I followed Paul into the financial services industry, toiling 12 long years peddling stocks, bonds, mutual funds and insurance products. During my tenure as a Wall Street professional (I use that term very loosely), I must have read 200 different books on investing. Oddly enough, I have discarded many of those poorly written investor guides and still refer back to this classic book penned by Peter Lynch, mutual fund demigod, investment guru, stock-picking legend!
At the heart of Lynch's case is that each individual has enough inherent knowledge and experience to be a successful investor. He uses numerous analogies to show investors:
1. The power of common knowledge (take advantage of what you already know) 2. You don't need to be a Wall Street analyst to uncover great investment opportunities 3. You are not disadvantaged vs. large, institutional investors You don't have to accurately predict the stock market to make money in stocks 4. To keep an open mind to new ideas
From my years on Wall Street, I found many of his theories and ideas to be completely accurate. Many other books I have read focus on the inherent evils of the possessed financial consultant community. Yes, the industry has its problems. However, $8 stock trades are not the only ingredients in profitable investing. In fact, I don't recall him emphasizing the need for discount trades, a fact over-emphasized in almost every other book I have read (remember, I am no longer in the industry...I don't need to strike a case for broker commissions). Instead, he shows you what information to focus on and how to apply it.
Do yourself a favor: Buy this book. Read it twice. It is not outdated...it is timeless. Yea, I know, you already know it all. My advice is to lose the ego and take a refresher course on common sense investing. When you finish, put it on your bookshelf. Do not give it to your kids or neighbors; buy them their own copies. This is a great book!

1 of 3 books you have to have
By Mat R. Diehl
There are 3 books any person who is new to investing in the stock market MUST have. This book, Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor and Pat Dorsey's The 5 rules for successful stock investing. The insights these 3 books will give you are priceless and a MUST for anyone wanting to make money in the market. I am very happy to own all 3 and intend on passing them along to my son so he can learn how to best make his money work for him. Lynch goes through how to identify companies that may be of interest, then how to further analyze the prospects of making money by purchasing that company's stock, and then how to continue monitoring whether the stock is likely to head upward. Lynch places companies into 1 of 6 categories and gives you strategies for buying and selling companies that fall into each of the categories. As a fund manager who has proven his strategies are successful, his insight definitely carries some credibility.

Stop listening to professionals!
By Giancarlo Nicoli
Note: I assume you already know who Mr. Lynch is (a former fund manager), and what Mr. Lynch did (he consistently beat the market - "he has a proven track record" - for almost twenty years).

The book has a witty, easygoing style; it's entertaining and informative, and you'll pretty soon find the urge to read it all as soon as possible. Beware, it's not an easy book! To read this book is not a substitute for hard work. There are no magic formulae to apply. There are no shortcuts to riches, you have to do your homeworks anyway!

"One Up" is divided in three sections. The first deals with how to assess yourself as a stockpicker; the second deals with how to find the most promising opportunities, what to look for in a company and what to avoid, and what to make of the various numbers (p/e ratio, book value, cash flow, etc - explanations are clear, this is a book for everyone) that are often mentioned in technical evaluations of stocks. The third part basically is about everything else, including when to buy and when to sell.

Mr. Lynch opens the book with his rule number one, devoted to those believing that professionals will do better than individuals because professionals know more and have more skills (I'll extensively quote him): "Stop listening to professionals! Twenty years in this business convinces me that any normal person (...) can pick stocks just as well, if not better, than the average Wall Street expert". No wonder here and there we find 1-star, angry reviews of this book!

Here are, in my opinion, the basics of this book:

The Street Lag
"Under the current system, a stock isn't truly attractive until a number of large institutions have recognized its suitability and an equal number of respected Wall Street analysts (the researchers who track the various industries and companies) have put it o the recommended list. With so many people waiting for others to make the first move, it's amazing that anything gets bought."

A Good Market or a Bad Market
"Thousand of experts study overbought indicators, oversold indicators, head-and-shoulder patterns, put-call ratios, the Fed's policy on money supply, foreign investment, the movement of the constellations through the heavens, and the moss on oak trees, and they can't predict markets with any useful consistency." Is the current a good market? Please don't ask. Don't try to time the market.

The Perfect Stock
"Getting the story on a company is a lot easier if you understand the basic business. That's why I'd rather invest in panty hose than in communications satellites, or in motel chains than in fiber optics. The simpler it is, the better I like it. When somebody says, "Any idiot could run this joint," that's a plus as far as I'm concerned, because sooner or later any idiot probably is going to be running it."

How to find the tenbaggers
("In Wall Street parlance a "tenbagger" is a stock in which you've made ten times your money".)
Among other "qualities" to look for, explained by Mr. Lynch, the following are my favourites:
- Its name sounds dull - or, even better, ridiculous;
- It does something dull;
- The institutions don't own it, and the analysts don't follow it;
- It's got a niche;
- The insiders are buyers;
- The company is buying back shares.
Of course, Mr. Lynch describes in detail why he thinks you have to look for these aforementioned (and others) qualities in a stock to qualify it as a "buy"

The flaw in Book Value
"Book value gets a lot of attention these days - perhaps because it's such an easy number to find. You see it reported everywhere (...). People invest in these on the theory that if the book value is $20 a share and the stock sells for $10, they're getting something for half price. The flaw is that the stated book value often bears little relationship to the actual worth of the company. It often understates or overstates reality by a large margin. Penn Central had a book value of more than $60 a share when it went bankrupt!".

I can summarize the only weakness I found in this book after the following quotation:
"At one point I'd decided the motel industry was due for a cyclical turnaround. I'd already invested in United Inns, the largest franchiser of Holiday Inns, and I was keeping my ears open for other opportunities. During a telephone interview with a vice president at United Inns, I asked which company was Holiday Inn's most successful competitor.
"Asking about the competition is one of my favorite techniques for finding promising new stocks. Muckamucks speak negatively about the competition ninety-five percent of the time, and it doesn't mean much. But when an executive of one company admits he's impressed by another company, you can bet that company is doing something right. Nothing could be more bullish than a begrudging admiration from a rival.
"La Quinta Motors Inns", the vice president of United Inns enthused. They're doing a great job. They're killing us in Houston and in Dallas."
"He sounded very impressed, and so was I."

Well, I guess everybody out there can pick up the telephone and have a nice, revealing conversation about the competition with a big company's vice president, uh? Don't you believe this to likely happen to you as well, do you?
And just in case, SEC's Regulation Full Disclosure made it almost impossible anyway (God bless Arthur Levitt, former SEC chairman, who gave us the Reg FD - after Mr. Lynch wrote this book).

That aside, what a great book! I definitely recommend this timeless classic.
