A boy and his friends must find a way to survive in the mining tunnels after their new space colony is attacked in this gritty action-adventure novel, which School Library Journal called “a solid survival story.”

In space. Underground. And out of time.

Christopher Nichols and his family live on a new planet, Perses, as colonists of Melming Mining’s Great Mission to save the earth. Dozens of families like Christopher’s have relocated, too, like his best friend Elena Rosales.

A communications blackout with Earth hits, and all of Perses is on its own for three months. It’s okay, though, because the colonists have prepared, stockpiling food and resources to survive. But they never prepared for an attack.

Landers, as the attackers are called, obliterate the colony to steal the metal and raw ore. Now in a race against time, Christopher, along with a small group of survivors, are forced into the maze of mining tunnels. The kids run. They hide. But can they survive?

From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Christopher, his parents, and a few other families live on Perses, a planetoid in Earth's solar system that has been set up as a mining operation, shipping much-needed ore back to Earth. One night, just as a communications blackout begins, raiders attack Perses, bombing and shooting into the gathered crowds. Christopher and a few other kids survive, hiding in the mining tunnels. It will be two months before the blackout is over, however, and Christopher isn't sure they can hold out that long. As the oldest, it's up to him to find a way to keep everyone alive and figure out a way to contact Earth once the blackout ends. A survivor with a more militant agenda, the discovery of Perses' dark secret, and a spy within the ranks threaten not only his plan, but everyone's survival. MiNRs combines elements of science fiction and adventure to create a novel with high appeal. Christopher is a very well-developed, realistic character. Secondary characters are developed to varying degrees, but their motivations are clear and each is essential to the story. Plot twists and turns pull readers through the novel and keep them on the edge of their seats. There is never a dull moment or unnecessary scene. VERDICT A solid survival story with a cliff-hanger ending that will leave readers clamoring for more.—Heather Miller Cover, Homewood Public Library, AL

Review
"Brainy and somewhat nave, Christopher makes for a solid, earnest narrator, and the other kids, especially his enthusiastic friend Elena, are similarly believable." (Publishers Weekly)

Space Mines, the final frontier
By Core
I purchased this book on a whim. I like space operas, and love cool stories and Amazons algorithm suggested this.

The hook of the story get's you pretty quick. Another words, your given the world, the situation and things start moving at a pretty quick pace.
Your introduced to a main threat early on, and then it's survival.. literally the author throws problem after problem at the characters, and as the reader it gets old. And finally you make it to the end of the book. (Not going to spoil anything)
Anyways, the ending of the book basically make's no sense, what so ever... with what your given initially... It's just like the main characters father, it turns out that he worked in the mines as a young man, and you have this whole quagmire of a situation come to light.. and then a chance to throw a corporation under the bus..

Given the world and the circumstances that the author paints at the very beginning of the book, and then you stretch that out and look at the ending. It makes no sense. The author basically says the world is hurting for resources big time, and that is the whole point of this mining operation.. and somehow, some organization on earth has the resources to just launch space craft willy nilly.. I'm purposefully being vague as to not ruin the story. But it was disappointing.

Long story short I regret my purchase to some degree.
And quite frankly it will be very interesting to see how the author segue into another volume.
